Eoghan and Brigid MacCarthy

Eoghan and Brigid MacCarthy emigrated from Ballygarvan, Co. Cork in 1851. In company with other Irish emigrants they settled on the South bank of the Thames on the new site now occupied by the County Hall. Eoghan MacCarthy had very little English, and, in fact, all his life his prayers were said in Irish. Eoghan was a sportsman, athlete and wrestler, known as MacCarthy Capall (MacCarthy the Horse) in his birthplace, Shanagraigue, Ballygarvan, Co.Cork.
